How to Choose LED Flood Lights for Reliable Outdoor Coverage
When it comes to picking an LED flood light, there are typically only a few questions at the beginning: watts, watts, watts, how many watts?
That’s a valid question, but it’s at the wrong end of the decision making process. The wattage indicates the amount of electrical energy that a fixture uses. It doesn’t provide any information on how far the light will go, how it will disperse over an area, whether it can cause glare, or whether it will perform well in rain, dust, heat and voltage fluctuations.
Choosing the right begins with lighting task. If the area, mounting position, viewing conditions and operating conditions are known, the technical specifications can be determined with ease.

Determine what the Flood Light needs to achieve
LED flood light application is used for washing the façade, parking areas, loading bays, security perimeters, billboards, sports courts, gardens, ports and construction sites. All such applications do not require the same light distribution.
A wide soft wash may be needed for a landscape wall. The billboard is located at a distance and requires more projection and controlled aiming. In order for a security camera to work well, it must be adequately and fairly evenly illuminated with minimal bright spots. For a sports court, coverage and uniformity throughout the court is necessary, along with glare control.
Before comparing products, be sure:
- Side lengths of a region
- The height and distance of the mounting are.
- Required operating hours
- Main viewing direction
- Set goal brightness/illuminance
- Available power supply
- Corrosion exposure and weather conditions.
- These can be either control or dimming requirements.
Available in COB, modular and solar options, Dawn Lighting’s Flood Light range covers a variety of outdoor, industrial, architectural and project applications.
The light output (lumens) and distribution pattern are more important than wattage.
Lumens measure the total amount of visible light output of a fixture. Wattage is a measure of its power consumption. Their correlation is the luminous efficacy, typically given in lumens per watt.
A more efficient flood light will generate the same amount of light and use less power. But, lumens don’t necessarily indicate where the light will go.
A narrow beam 15,000 lumen fixture can have a longer reach but will enlighten less surface area. A lumens wide beam model can light a large surface up to a short distance away with a dimmer light.
Hence, buyers should compare the lumen output, efficacy, beam distribution and photometric data. When you’re working on a bigger project, a simulation based on IES will be more helpful than using wattage data alone to select fixtures.

Compare Beam Angle and Distance/Coverage
The beam angle affects the distribution of available light.

Narrow beams focus output and typically are used for greater throws, height, columns, far-away facades or certain sports. Medium sized beams are equally balanced for projection and width. Wide beams are good for near walls, yards, entrances and general area lighting.
Symmetrical beams emit the light equally around the fixture centre line. Asymmetrical optics deliver more light to the target and, when fixtures are set at the edge of a road, court or parking area, can minimize light loss.
For scalable outdoor projects, Dawn Lighting’s LED modular flood lights include the option for various symmetrical and asymmetrical distributions.
The last angle should be read off the installation drawing. A narrow beam width with a limited aiming distance can result in a hot spot; a wide beam could result in some spill and could not reach the far edge.
| Application | Primary Selection Priority | Common Mistake |
| Building façade | Beam control and colour quality | Creating visible hot spots |
| Parking area | Uniformity and glare control | Selecting by wattage only |
| Security perimeter | Camera-compatible coverage | Leaving dark gaps |
| Billboard | Projection distance and aiming | Excessive spill above the sign |
| Sports court | Uniformity and user comfort | Aiming fixtures into sightlines |
| Loading yard | Durability and maintenance | Ignoring surge and heat exposure |
Understand the different types of light that COB and SMD chips can produce.
COB flood lights employ a number of LED dies tightly clustered into a light emitting region. They are capable of giving high centre-beam intensity and can be adequate in situations that require concentrated projection.
SMD flood lights spread out several packages of LEDs on a larger board. This can help to provide a wider, flatter wash, and can be implemented for close-up facades, signs, gardens, and overall security zones.
There is no automatic superiority of either technology. It’s not just about the abbreviation – the optical design, LED quality, thermal management, driver, and intended distance are all important factors to consider.
Dawn Lighting’s line of LED COB flood lights can be as small as a landscape fixture or higher powered for stadiums, ports, security and large facades.

When setting up a display, check for unwanted glare and then increase the output.
The brighter the installation, the not always the safer the installation.
Additionally, when the fixture is installed at too low a level, or pointing toward drivers, players, pedestrians, residents or security cameras, its intensity can be so great it actually decreases visibility. Certainly, dark surroundings can be made to look harder to see due to bright areas in the foreground.
Mounting height, direction of light, protection, distribution of light and user locations are all factors in glare control. Fixtures should be set above eye level, facing down towards the work area if possible.
If the sports court, public facility or property is close to a residence, test at night or use a photometric review to eliminate dark spots instead of increasing the wattage.
Set the Colour Temperature and CRI for the Task.
Colour temperature impacts on appearance and visual comfort.
Warm white light can be appropriate for landscapes, hotels, facades and for home applications. In the commercial areas, a neutral white will deliver a clear, balanced look. Cooler whites might make a site appear brighter, but too much of it can make the site feel severe, and lead to higher complaints in sensitive areas.
Colour rendering index (CRI) is a measure of the natural appearance of colours. The level of CRI may not be that important for standard security and industrial lighting applications, but more than this is better for façade, retail, art and camera-sensitive applications.
Maintain uniform colour temperature when fixtures are seen in the same room/space.
The IP number isn’t the only indicator of outdoor protection.
IP ratings are a description of resistance to dust and water under specified test conditions. They do not guarantee resistance to corrosion, impact, UV, or high temperature, or to poor drainage and/or incorrect installation.
Anyone looking to buy an outdoor unit should consider:
- IP and IK ratings
- The housing is made of 100% recycled plastic.
- Quality of gasket and cable-glad.
- Corrosion-resistant coating
- Lens protection/tempered glass.
- Orientation of drainage and installation
- Operating-temperature range
For example, an IP66 fixture might be appropriate for an outdoor location that is exposed, and in coastal areas, a higher level of coating, stainless fasteners and extra corrosion protection might be required.
Take a look at the Driver, Surge Protection and Heat path.
Although most of the attention goes to the LED chips, drivers and thermal design are often the reasons for failures in the field.
The driver to be used should be compatible with the voltage and frequency of the area and acceptable in terms of power factor, efficiency, protection and dimming. Roof, pole and high mast mounted fixtures may also need a higher level of surge protection as they are more vulnerable to lightning related and grid transients.
Heat needs to flow quickly from the LED board through the housing to the air surrounding the casing. The deep heat-sink fins, good thermal interfaces, sufficient mass of the housing, and appropriate spacing of the components limit the temperature rise.
This 30W IP66 LED flood light from Dawn Lighting is an example of how housing design, driver selection, surge protection and weather sealing all come together in one small commercial-lighting fixture.

Installation and Maintenance Before Ordering (IMBO)
Check bracket size and range, fixture weight, cable inlet, wiring clearance, tool access and mounting structure compatibility.
In the case of larger fixtures, examine surface area exposed to the wind and the ability of the wall, pole or crossarm to support the full load. Drivers and modular components should be serviceable without the need of necessarily removing the entire installation.
If a fixture is hard to aim, frequently fails, or special equipment is needed to get at the fixture for replacement, the fixture can be costly despite its apparent low cost.
Final Selection Check
But the right LED flood light isn’t just the brightest light that you can afford.
It must be able to illuminate the desired target, reduce glare, withstand the specific installation conditions, be compatible with the local electrical system and be easy to maintain. Look at the total lighting outcome and the risk of the lighting life—not just the wattage.

FAQ
Q1. What should be the wattage of the outdoor LED flood light?
This depends on the size of the area, mounting height, beam angle, efficacy and target illuminance. Chose output based on a lighting calculation, not simply by wattage.
Q2. What type of beam; narrow or wide, is better?
A narrow beam is more effective with long-range projections and targeted areas. A wide beam is good for surfaces that are close by and general coverage.
Q3. What level of IP rating would be appropriate for outdoor flood lights?
The standard protection levels of IP65 are common in outdoor applications and IP66 is more resistant to dust and water jets. The complete installation, including glands and connections must be properly sealed as well.
Q4. Which is better COB flood light or SMD flood light?
COB models can give a focus intensity, and SMD models can give a wide and smooth wash. The choice will vary according to the distance to be covered and the lighting effect you want to achieve.
Q5. Are LED flood lights surge protected?
For commercial, industrial, pole mounted and high power installations where the installation is exposed to the weather, surge protection is strongly recommended. The protection level required is dependent upon the electrical network and the lightning risk.
